Classic Monte Cristo Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 8 slices white bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices cooked ham
  • 8 slices cooked turkey
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
  • Raspberry or strawberry jam for serving (optional)

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard. Spread the mixture evenly over one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Layer 4 slices of bread with a slice of Swiss cheese, 2 slices of ham, another slice of Swiss cheese, and 2 slices of turkey. Top with the remaining bread slices, mayonnaise side down.
  3. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
  4. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides.
  6. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook until golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Remove from the skillet and dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve with raspberry or strawberry jam.
