Giant Muffaletta Italian Sandwich

Ingredients:

A single large, round loaf of Italian bread, approximately 10 inches in diameter.

1/4 cup olive oil

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

1/4 lb thinly sliced turkey ham

1/4 lb thinly sliced beef salami

1/4 lb thinly sliced mortadella

1/4 lb sliced provolone cheese

1/4 lb sliced mozzarella cheese

1 cup olive salad (store-bought or homemade)

1/4 cup sliced pepperoncini peppers (optional)

Instructions:

1. Slice the bread loaf horizontally into two even halves.

2. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, oregano, and basil.

3. Brush the olive oil mixture generously onto the cut sides of both bread halves.

4. Start layering ingredients on the bottom half of the bread in this order: turkey ham, beef salami, mortadella, provolone cheese, and mozzarella cheese.

5. Spread the olive salad evenly over the cheese layer. If desired, add the sliced pepperoncini for a spicy kick.

6. Cover with the top half of the bread, pressing down gently.

7. Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap.

8. Place a heavy weight (such as a skillet or heavy dish) on top and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld.

9. When ready to serve, unwrap the sandwich and cut it into wedges using a sharp knife.

Tips:

Preparing the sandwich the night before enhances the flavors.

For clean cuts, use a serrated knife.
